I asked my friends to go on my website and tell me honestly positive and negatives about it;
• (1)‘I really like the first page where you click on the logo and it leads to the homepage’. (Sarah, parent)
• (2) ‘I like it but I think the main photograph needs to be realigned’. (Joe, friend)
• (3) ‘I think the writing on the ‘me’ section is too close together and hard to read, it needs to be moved up a little’. (Elisa, friend)
• (4) ‘The contact form could be moved down a bit’ (Flo, friend)
• (5) ‘I think the navigation is really good it is simple and easy to use’ (Mike, friend)
• (6) ‘I think the Graphics could look better, if you worked on them a bit more, do you want me to help?’ (Sam, friend)
• (7) ‘I like the gallery because you can change it into seeing all thumbnails, which is useful if you have already visited the website and want to go back to a particular image. (Joe, friend)
• (8) ‘I like the logo’ (Noah, sibling)
• (9) ‘The white background and simple font do not distract from you images’ (Elisa, friend)
I am pleased with the feedback I got because I agree with all the constructive criticism with it. All of the friends I asked are all on creative BA courses such as Graphics and Illustration so I value their opinion highly. I also asked my parents for an older generations opinion and my brothers for a younger persons. Referring to comment (2) I think it does need to be realigned but I also think the browser page need to be bigger because the image looks out in the wrong place because of the excess white around the edges that was not part of my design. (3) I am going to make the writing on the ‘me’ section easier to read by changing the front to bold and making it slightly bigger. I am going to get some assistance with the graphics on my website, it is too late to do now before the hand in but I think it will be useful to have someone else’s opinion on the design aspect. The positive comments I received make me realise that my design considerations were correct and that if I continue to work on my website it will just improve more. I do not think that it is finished yet I think that the website I am submitting is an initial draft, I am happy with it but I know it could be better but at the moment I do not know how but it will come to me as my work develops. I think this will come as I improve my photographic skills and hopefully get more work and credits to publish. The aspect I am most pleased about is my logo that I designed last semester, usually I go off designs I create like this but I think that the logo really works for my branding. It is a drawing from a photograph (the one on my homepage) and I think it represents me well as a young creative. I did not want to have a logo with anything to do with a camera because I want to be branded as a photographer because I want to be a stylist and a fashion editor as well.
To publish your website from Rapidweaver you need to put these details into you go to;
Publishing settings – File > Publishing Settings and then enter your personal details;
Then you have to click Advanced Options and make sure that User Passive Mode is checked ON.
Once I had published my website I decided to change the deisgn again slightly. I renamed some of the jpeg navigation, from ‘fashion’ to ‘editorial’ and from ‘places’ to destinations’. I did this because it sounds more professional. my website homepage now look like this;
After I published my website posted the link on my personal facebook page and my photographer page and on my blog and on my twitter. I a got positive response on my blog, with lots of ‘likes’. The most useful bit of feedback I received was from my friend who pointed out that the pages need to be re-named;
This is a good thing about Rapidweaver is that it is easier to make adjustments and republish the website if you notice mistakes.
Google analytics generates detailed statistics about the visitors to the website. It can track visitors from all referrers, including search engines, display advertising, pay-per-click networks, e-mail marketing and digital collateral such as links within PDF documents. It was really easy to set up here are some screen grabs of me setting it up.
You copy the code it creates for you and paste it on to every page you want to track immediately.
I think adding Google analytics is really beneficial to learning more about which pages drive the most page views from your top content report. this report can answer questions you have about your most or least effective pages. YOu can see which groups of visitors become customers or make the enquires.
Before I created my own business cards I looked at other photographers online. I found a lot of the designs very cheesy and quite dated. I looked at my parents business cards and my uncles for design ideas.
Some examples of Designs I do not likeare;
I really do not like these designs because I think they look like they have been created in WordArt and I thin think this kind of design is dated so it would not give the best impression if I used a design like this as I want to do fashion photography.
I created a mock up of what I would like my business cards to look like. I have spent some time playing round with what I think should be on my business. I want it to be in keeping with my branding, so the same logo and font used on my website and CV.
I think this is far too busy and I do not like having ‘photographer’ and ‘stylist’ on my cards. I do not want to give myself a title because I do not think I am yet a photographer or a stylist I would prefer to market myself as a creative person and use my business cards to look professional when asked for my contact details.
I now think that I want a double sided business card, this was my original idea but I thought it could work just on one side. It does not work if I want to include everything I want and still keep it very minimal.
I used the same font ‘Princetown’ as I did on my website I ddi because the logo with the ‘Princetown’ font couldbe hard to read and may be blurred on the hard copy. So I just used ‘Gill Sans’ instead this makes it easier to ead and I think the logo looks sharper like this. I used ‘Princetown’ font in pink because it goes well with my logo the connotation being; young, fresh and fun. All part of my branding.
Before I made my ‘creative’ curriculum vitae I only had a very simple design made in a word document that covered mainly retail jobs. I re-designed my Cv in Photoshop, I kept the theme the same as my website, so sans serif font, white background, very minimal and the use of my logo to keep it in with my branding. I created a profile at the beginning of my CV as an introduction I found this quite hard to talk about myself on my last CV I simply had; ‘Hard working and ambitious student looking for part time work’. I created the layout in landscape format because I think it is not what people expect to see and come across as more creative.
I edited out information from my original CV that I do not think is relevant for my creative CV such as part time jobs I have had. I added new things like my technological software skills and expanded my interests.
I really likes this CV because it is very detailed and the overall shape of it really catches your eye I also like the simple sans serif font that makes it easy to read in amongst the elaborate graphics. The only problem is that the font is quite small and may put off some employees from reading it all.
The CV above is another example of a good design for a CV , it belong to a graphic designer and I think it really shows off his skills to full extent and it is very confrontational, I think an employee would find it hard to ignore this design.
A example of a bad design is this CV below;
It is really bad design because first of all the photograph included is far too provocative for a professional job application and suggests juxtaposed with the lined paper and handwriting font used that she is immature and inexperienced. Some of the font is horizontally aligned and just makes the paper appear messy and hard to read, along with the many little drawings that represent her badly as a graphic designer.
Before I started creating my website I downloaded Block and Blocks box plug in so I have a blank canvas in which to create my website. Once Rapidweaver is open you click on the ‘Add’ icon at the top left of the page and a window will open with a choice of diffrent pages you can add to the website.
I then selected ‘Blocks’ and a white page appears, I then renamed the page so it is easier to navigate between them as I star to build up my website, to do this you double click on the web page. To increase the size of the web page you go to Web Inspector – Page. I changed mine to 900×700.
To select the Blocks box theme I went into themes and ctrl click blocks box and select duplicate theme, I then renamed this theme to use on my website.
By continuing to add extra pages into my website such as a homepage and a page for each of my galleries I found Rapidweaver a lot easier to use than Dreamweaver. I have created galleries within my pages by selecting ‘Photo Album’ in ‘Add’ and dragging it under my page. For my splash page (now changed to index page) I have made my logo and placed it in the center of the page. I have always envisaged my index page to be minimal like this, when the user clicks on logo it navigates them to the homepage.
I created buttons for my website in Photoshop, downloading a font from dafont.com. I then saved them as jpegs and dragged them into Rapidweaver where I played around with different layouts until I decided on one I liked. I have the logo on each of my pages to make the site come together and I want my logo to be a big part of my branding, as it will feature on my stickers and and business cards.
Making a gallery in Rapidweaver is very simple you just add a ‘Photo Album’ page and drag and drop in the images that you have already saved for web devices. I played around with the order of my images in ‘Edit’ and by selecting preview you can see what it will look like in a browser.
To add a link for navigation you select the navigation (in my case I was using text images) and select add link and it brings up this window;
By setting a link to the page you want to be navigated to it will then do so when the navigation is clicked on in a web browser.
I found Rapidweaver much easier to use and update than Dreamweaver I am glad I chose to make my website this way.
To fit in with rest of my website design I have changed my Logo slightly in Photoshop. I did this so the logo corresponds with the rest of the font and design of the website.
